Tinea Corporis

Tinea corporis is named after the fungus that causes the infection and also known as the ringworm of the body. Ringworm of the body is due to the shape of the rash which is almost circular or ring-shaped. The condition is highly contagious.

SIGNS/SYMPTOMS:

  • 1. It looks like a ring or circular shape rash with the edge of the rash slightly raised.
  • 2. Itching occurs in the area
  • 3. The skin around the rash may be dry and flaky
  • 4. The more severe condition may result in more circular rashes and cause severe itching that may develop into blisters with time.

CAUSES:

Tinea corporis is caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. Dermatophytes live off substance keratin that is normally found in many parts of the body including nails skin etc.

  • 1. It can be caused by direct contact between an affected individual and unaffected one.
  • 2. Ringworm affects pets mostly and while petting or grooming an animal this condition may affect the individual.
  • 3. It is possible to get ringworm through indirect contact such as using the same towel or bedding as the affected person.

High risk of Ringworm affecting individuals who:

  • 1. Live in a crowded or humid place
  • 2. Sweat excessively
  • 3. Have a weak immune system
  • 4. Wear tight clothing with poor aeration

DIAGNOSIS:

  • 1. Usually, a skin examination to rule out other skin infections not caused by fungus is the first step.
  • 2. Then a skin scraping from the affected area is taken to be examined under a microscope to confirm the presence of fungus and if needed a culture test of the sample is done to see how the fungus grows.
  • 3. Every test mentioned is performed at our center by our doctors so that you don’t have to check for an alternate option and every report is explained to you in detail by our staff before we proceed with the treatment plan.

TREATMENT

  • 1. Most cases can be treated by applying topical antifungal creams to the affected area for a few weeks so that the fungus is eradicated completely.
  • 2. In severe cases, oral medication may be prescribed by the doctor in addition to the topical applications.
  • 3. The use of steroids is rare for treating this condition but if the above medications show no signs of improvement then steroids may be prescribed by the doctor.
  • 4. Doctors at Royal Hairnic have been successfully treating individuals suffering from this condition keeping in mind that the cause of the infection must be completely eradicated so that the infection doesn’t reoccur.

PREVENTION

  • 1. Infection can be prevented by avoiding getting in contact with an infected person directly or indirectly.
  • 2. Avoid Sharing clothing or towels with someone with the infection
  • 3. If your pet has a ringworm infection, taking your pet to a veterinarian is a better option as you are more likely to get infected with the infection.
